In the News
Dr. Tauber recently completed work on a major collaborative project with eye specialists worldwide. Eyelid inflammatory disease (meibomitis) is one of the most common but least understood causes of dry eye-like symptoms that brings patients to see their eye doctors. More than 50 international experts participated in the Workshop, which continued for 2 years beginning in November 2008. Subcommittees were formed on the basis of experience, and Dr. Tauber was privileged to serve as co-Chairman of the Treatment and Management Subcommittee. The 150+ page report is likely to stand as the definitive guidance summary of this disease for years to come, and will shape future research efforts worldwide.
Dr. Tauber recently returned from a trip to Barcelona as part of the IOS Focus Group, a special advisory group working with Allergan, Inc. on next-generation medications for the treatment of dry eye and related diseases. This international group reviews the most current research in this area of eye disease and plans future directions for drug development.
Dr. Tauber has written eight book chapters in the past, but, for the first time, has co-authored a book. Springer US will soon release The Sclera, 2nd edition, co-written by Maite Sainz de la Maza MD, Clinical Associate professor of Ophthalmology, Barcelona, Spain; Joseph tauber MD, Clinical Professor of Ophthalmology, University of Kansas; C. Stephen Foster MD, Professor of Ophthalmology, Harvard Medical School. This new book will be the definitive resource on the diagnosis and treatment of diseases of the sclera (the white outer coat of the eye) for many years.
Since 2005, Dr. Tauber has taught a two hour course on Advanced Treatment of Diseases of the Ocular Surface (dry eye and related diseases) at the Annual Meeting of the Academy of ophthalmology. Typically attended by 70-100 eye care specialists, this year’s course brought 125 attendees. The course has received nearly the highest ratings possible, and has become a regular part of the meeting.
